One Year, Four Big Wins for Tibet

This December, we are going to take a look back at some of the amazing success we have achieved together in 2022, starting with...

One year, four big campaign wins for Tibet.

  1. We put the spotlight on Drago County - and the authorities know we’re watching.

Our research partners Tibet Watch broke a series of stories about demolitions and arrests in Drago County: the frontline of China’s war on Buddhism. Our coverage made local authorities roll back their crackdown and scramble to cover up evidence of the demolitions.

  2. We demanded a ban on Hikvision cameras - and their profits dropped.

Since we began our Stop Hikvision campaign to disrupt the Chinese government’s mass surveillance of Tibet, Hikvision’s net profits dropped by 11% due to 'negative public opinion'. Just last week, the UK government announced that its departments must 'cease deployment' of Hikvision security cameras.

  3. We got the attention of the United Nations.

In May - after 19,000 people signed our petition - we compelled the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet to make a statement about protecting Tibet’s children from colonial boarding schools; the first time she had mentioned Tibet during her four years as High Commissioner.

  4. Rinchen Kyi released!

Rinchen Kyi was unjustly detained in 2021 after her Tibetan language school was forced to close. Thousands of Free Tibet supporters took online actions targeting the Chinese embassies and local authorities in Qinghai and sent postcards with her face to the Chinese embassy in London. She was released in April 2022 after eight months of detention.

Whilst we’re pleased to share these key wins for Tibet with you, the struggle for freedom continues.

Tibetan children are still being separated from their families and sent to colonial boarding schools. Tibetans still face long prison sentences and police violence when they stand up for religious freedom.

Free Tibet will not rest until we see an end to China’s brutal occupation, and we need your support to do so.

The majority of our income comes from donations from generous supporters such as yourself. Can you help us continue to build on an amazing 12 months and donate today?
