Since the spring of 2017, Google has been developing a new search engine, one with the sole aim of getting back into the Chinese marketplace.

‘Dragonfly’, as the search engine is called, is being designed to comply with China’s repressive internet censorship laws, blocking web pages that discuss forbidden topics like ‘human rights’, ‘democracy’ or ‘Tibet’. Dragonfly will also collect personal information, helping Chinese authorities link searches with individuals’ phone numbers and other identifying data. In this way, Google’s software would be directly supporting China’s repression of Tibetans attempting to contact the outside world, and even punish them for expressing their own culture online.
